Most careers in risk, compliance and audit start with technical expertise. The step into leadership asks for something different: the ability to shape decisions made by people who do not report to you.
Habits that build influence
- Translate, do not transmit. Lead with what a finding means for the business, then the detail.
- Build relationships before you need them. Trust is easier to draw on than to create in a crisis.
- Choose your battles. Be clear about which issues are material and be flexible on the rest.
- Make your work visible. Present, write and contribute beyond your own function.
- Find sponsors as well as mentors. Mentors advise you; sponsors speak for you when you are not in the room.
LIC’s mentoring and Career Accelerator programmes are designed around these transitions — from first management role to executive and board positions.
